Thomas K. Hagan, 67, of Concord, NH died at home on May 3, 2024. Known to family, friends, and colleagues as Tod, he was born in December 1956 in Boston, MA. He grew up in Newton, MA where he graduated from Newton South High School.
Tod started computer programming while in high school. Over his career he was employed at Camex, Amnet, the Mount Washington Observatory, and the University of New Hampshire. He enjoyed tackling and solving technical challenges and was interested in the visual display of data, open source development, and modeling of complex systems. A highlight of his professional life was the work he did supporting and collaborating with atmospheric scientists.
Tod was a kind and gentle man with high intellect, deep curiosity, and a mischievous sense of humor, including a love of puns. He enjoyed maps, puzzles, and all kinds of games. His many interests included technology, hiking, trains, online gaming, and music. He taught himself guitar and played in the band Arcade Ambo in Boston’s vibrant music scene during the 1980s. He was a techie who never owned a smart phone, had an affinity for garlic and food well-seasoned with black pepper, and was the family sports stats guy on all things Celtics and March Madness.
As a boy, Tod developed a love for the outdoors when he was introduced to the White Mountains while hiking with his father, and later with his sisters, cousins and a wide network of hikers. After his marriage ended, he moved to New Hampshire in the late 1980s to be closer to the mountains. He built lasting friendships as a volunteer for the US Forest Service in the White Mountain National Forest and while employed at the Mount Washington Observatory, spending over two years on the summit. He often shared fond memories of those experiences.
Tod explored Boston’s MBTA at a young age when he would take the T to Science Park to spend time at the Museum of Science. He enjoyed riding the system and was a rail enthusiast throughout his life. Whenever possible, he would travel by train and took many train chasing trips in New England and around the US with friends.
Tod was an amazing brother to his three younger sisters, a dedicated son, and a devoted uncle. He cherished times when family would gather, sharing laughs and stories. He leaves his sisters Sarah Lance and her husband David, of Bedford, MA, Melissa Hagan and her husband Whitman Miller of Annapolis, MD, and Mariel Hagan and her husband Todd Weinman, of Nashville, TN, step-brother Jesse Breuer, along with niece Sophie and nephews Sander, Duncan, and Garrett, step-parents Archie Richards and Patricia Seybold, as well as many beloved extended family members. He was pre-deceased by his mother Carolyn Richards and his father Thomas G. Hagan.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tod’s memory to the Appalachian Mountain Club, 10 City Square, Boston, MA 02129 or https://www.outdoors.org/donate/tribute-gifts.
A Memorial Service celebrating Tod’s life will be held at a later date.
