Richard was born in Colebrook, NH on May 10, 1923, the son of the late Arthur L. and Sarah E. (Taylor) Hicks. He spent most of his childhood traveling from Maine, Florida and California with his family following his father’s career as a chef.
In December, 1941, immediately after Pearl Harbor, Richard enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He toured the world during World War II. He left Boston on the Queen Mary to Brazil, on to South Africa and Australia, ending his tour in New Guinea in the jungles… where he experienced direct combat. His Unit (43rd Bomb Group) was advanced detail paving the way for additional Units. Richard was honorably-medically discharged in 1944 with numerous Citations and Medals for his services and sacrifices during World War II. Richard returned to the States in February, 1944.
He later married the love of his life, Genevieve F. Griffith Lane (Hicks) of Concord in August, 1945. Together they raised seven beautiful children and had been together for almost 67 years.
Richard worked for the State as a Page at the New Hampshire Legislature. In 1947 he entered the NH Technical Institute earning a degree in Radio and Television Technology. Richard then went on to Northeast Electronics where he was a Supervisor of the Production Line. He ended his career owning a business as a handyman.
He loved playing golf and was a member of Beaver Meadow Golf Course for 20 years. His endless projects around the house were most fulfilling. His greatest pleasures were the endless family gatherings and attending his grandchildren’s numerous sports and activities. Spending time with family and grandchildren brought him true happiness.
Richard was a member of The Elks, VFW, DAV and The Masonic Blazing Star Eureka Lodge No. 11.
He was pre-deceased by three brothers, Arthur, Robert and Clifford, along with a very special step-grandson, Anthony Tessitore.
He is survived by his loving wife, Genevieve, two sons, Richard Jr. and his wife Jeromette of Nantucket, MA and Deer-Isle Stonington, Maine, and Jeff of Bow. Five daughters, Sarah Blake and her husband Charles of Concord, Roberta Libby and her husband Theodore of Vero Beach, FL, Kathy Whitehead and her husband Randall of Concord, Margaret Salamy and her husband Jay of Bow and Jennifer Rand and her husband Kevin of Bow, and one sister, Annette Rice. Richard also left behind eighteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Richard was the highlight of family gatherings. He was truly loved and admired by many because of his kind heart, strength and honesty. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 6th, 2012 at 10:00AM, at St. Paul’s Church on Park St in Concord. A procession will immediately follow to the NH State Veteran’s Cemetery in Boscawen for burial.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Richards’s memory to Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice Program, The Slusser Center, 30 Pillsbury Street, Concord, NH 03301.
