He was born in Ann Arbor, MI on July 23, 1929. Mr. Pahl was the son of Gardner S. Miller, DDS and Gertrude G. Gowman. He was also the adopted son of Clarence Walter Pahl.
Philip was a graduate of Isaac C. Elston High School, Michigan City, IN. He entered the University of Michigan in the Fall of 1946 to study Architecture and spent a year there. He then entered the U.S. Naval Academy where he graduated in June of 1951. He also received Graduate Degrees from the University of Washington (MSEE) in 1959, and from Western New England College (MBA) in 1979.
Mr. Pahl entered the U.S. Air Force on June 1st of 1951 and served until March of 1977, retiring with the rank of Colonel at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts. His decorations include the Legion of Merit with one Oak Leaf Cluster and the Air Force Commendation Medal. The highlight of his 26 years of Air Force service was the eight years he spent working on the development, test, production, and deployment of two Lockheed “Blackbirds” (YF12A and SR71). He also served for 5 years at Air Force Headquarters in the Pentagon.
Following his Air Force career, Phil worked for the Incoterm Corp, Honeywell Information Systems, and the Dynamics Research Corp., all in Massachusetts. In 1985, he moved to Warner, NH and remained a resident of New Hampshire until his death.
While in New Hampshire, Mr. Pahl lived in Warner, Pembroke, Canterbury (where he and his wife Ruth designed and helped build their own home), Hooksett, Bow, and Concord. His retirement activities included 10 years as a member of SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives), 22 Years of playing Tennis with the “Comstock Lode”, 2 years as a hospice volunteer, and 2 years in the Concord Chorale.
Mr. Pahl was preceded in death by his Wife of 22 years, Ruth E. Pahl of Bow, NH. They were married December 1st of 1992 at the Wyman Farm/B&B in Loudon, NH. They enjoyed many trips around the U.S. visiting friends and Phil’s scattered family. There was a lot of foreign travel too, including their long trip to Australia, a working vacation with Earthwatch in Hungary, and their four visits to Portugal. They also went on numerous trips to Canada pursuing Phil’s favorite hobby of genealogy. Phil was also preceded in death by his brother, Kurt Pahl from Vancouver, WA and his cousin Jerry A. Gowman from Oklahoma City, OK.
Phil is survived by the three sons of his first marriage, Larry of Chillicothe, OH, David of Austin, TX, and James of Roswell, GA., six grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.
A graveside service for Mr. Pahl will be held on August 3, 2022 at the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH at 10:00AM.
