Martha Jane (Hughes) LaPierre of Concord, NH passed from this life on August 16, 2012. She was born on March 14, 1926 as the only child to Josiah and Jenny (Greenlaw) Hughes. She married her husband and partner for life, David O. LaPierre on September 3, 1949 and remained by his side until he passed away in 2005. Martha is survived by four children: Carol A. Gregory with her husband Scott of Fryeburg, Maine; Thomas D. LaPierre with his wife Linda of Chichester, NH; Alice M. E. LaPierre with her husband Charles Hancock of Berkley, California; and Paulette LaPierre of Andover, Massachusetts. She had three grandsons: Peter LaPierre, David LaPierre, and Christopher Gregory; one great-granddaughter, Mckenzie LaPierre; and two nephews, John and James Rule. Besides her husband of 55 years, Martha was predeceased by one son, Paul J. LaPierre.
Martha was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She had a strong sense of family and worked hard, along with David, to instill that trait, along with self-reliance and true “Yankee” values in her children. She was a woman of deep faith that she carried with her throughout her life and was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Concord. Martha was a kind and gentle person. She took her role of homemaker as a lifetime commitment but was equally proud of the many years she worked as a telephone operator for the State of New Hampshire, as well as Pleasant View Nursing Home and Beede Electric. She had a lifelong love of animals and, at her home, there was seldom a time when there wasn’t at least one pet; ranging from horses and chickens, to dogs and cats. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and gave of her time and talents over the years by making hats for newborn babies at the Concord Hospital.
In her home, Martha served as a mother to all of the neighborhood children while her own children were growing up. Later, she became a grandmother figure to the next generation of neighbors. In her kitchen, the cookie jar was always kept full of homemade chocolate chip cookies for the next hungry child to come through the door, no matter what their age.
She touched many lives over the years and to meet her meant that you were her friend. Such was the case over the last year as she settled in to her new home at Gerrish Manor. She was loved by her neighbors and the staff at the home and that feeling was returned. Martha had no vices but, in her later years she took on one real indulgence that she relished: Hot Fudge Sundaes, especially if they were made with Maple Walnut Ice Cream.
