Loudon, NH - James D. Small, 79, longtime resident of Loudon, NH, passed away on March 24, 2025, at Concord Hospital, after a period of declining health. “J. D.” or “Jim” as he was affectionately known to everyone, was born on June 1, 1945, in Dover, NH, to his late parents, David K. and Avis L. (Tucker) Small. He was raised in Northwood, NH and graduated from Dover High School with the Class of 1963.
Like so many of his generation, J. D. began his lifelong devotion to service by proudly enlisting in the United States Navy. As a Veteran, he served from 1963 and was discharged in 1967. After his honorable and faithful service to our nation, J. D. continued his call to service and started a lifelong career in law enforcement. He worked as a NH State Trooper for many years until he transferred to federal law enforcement working at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until his retirement. During his retirement, he also worked as a security agent for the Manchester Veterans Administration Hospital.
J. D. who was a selfless person, often helping those who were less fortunate than himself, believed wholeheartedly in supporting his community. He was a member of both the Loudon Lions Club and American Legion. J. D. was a devoted parishioner at Faith Community Baptist Church. In his youth, he enjoyed being on the water, fishing, and golfing. In one last selfless act of kindness, J. D. gave the generous gift of himself to those suffering medically.
As the cherished patriarch of his family, J. D. is survived by his beloved bride, Carol Ann (Rose) Small, with whom he shared nearly sixty years of marriage together. He is survived by his two loving daughters; Michelle Wheeler and her husband Michael of Manchester, and Renee Small and her longtime partner Robert Garza Sr of Loudon. He is the proud grandfather of Michaela Wheeler, Amber Stevens, and Hunter (Stevens) Cuthbert and her husband Andrew, and great-grandfather to Bailey Sue. J. D. is also survived by his sister Susan (Small) Carr and her husband Winslow of Northwood, NH, several nieces and nephews, and his sister-in-law Joyce Small. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother William M. Small in 2012.
A funeral service for J. D. will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025. Calling hours start at 1:00pm, with the service starting at 2:00pm at the Faith Community Baptist Church, 334 N Village Rd, Loudon. Friends and family are cordially invited to attend. Interment will be privately held at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in his memory to either the Loudon Lions Club or Loudon American Legion.
