Sunday, July 6, 2014, after a period of declining health. After graduation from Lebanon High
School in 1941, he joined the U.S. Navy in World War II and served in Trinidad, British Guiana,
and Maui.
He met and married Margaret Laidlaw of New Jersey and brought her to Lebanon, NH, where
they became active in the Congregational Church and where they raised their three children,
Peggy, Donnie, and Barbie. Don worked for NE Telephone (later Verizon) as a line man and
supervisor. He oversaw several installations for Dartmouth College and Mary Hitchcock
Hospital in Hanover. He retired in 1984 after 38 years of dedicated service.
He was an avid golfer and was a member of Carter Country Club (Lebanon) and later Beaver
Meadow (Concord). He shot a hole in one at Carter Country Club, NH Country Club in Sutton,
and Angus Lea in Hillsboro. During his retirement, Don volunteered to make repairs for Talking
Books for the blind.
He loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a quiet and humble man supporting
and encouraging his children in every aspect of their lives. He will be remembered for his strong
work ethic as well as being a true gentleman, a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.
He was pre-deceased by his parents, Bert and Marion Lower; his sister, Phyllis Lucia; and his
daughter-in-law, Brenda Lower.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Margaret, of 68 years; daughter, Peggy Cain (Norman); son,
Donnie Lower, and daughter, Barbie Lower; grandchildren, Kristin Cain, Pam Owens, Terri
Gustafson, and Kevin Lower and their families; and six great-grandchildren; and his brother,
Charlie Lower and his wife, Jackie.
A special thanks to our family friend, Lou Anne Paquin, for her many acts of kindness
throughout the years to Don and Marge. Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Jasmine Shah and her staff;
