Catherine “Kit” Currie, 86, died peacefully on March 30, 2011 after a period of declining health. Kit lived most recently at the Harris Hill Center in Concord, but had lived the previous four years at Pleasant View Retirement Community. During this time, Kit was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Concord.
Kit was born in Grand Rapids, MI., the daughter of John Biddle Williams and Katherine Johnston Williams. She graduated with a degree in Religious Education from NYU in 1956 where she met her husband, George Black Currie. They married shortly after graduation and lived in Long Island, NY, throughout their 24 years of marriage. While a homemaker and young mother, Kit was a volunteer in her town’s library, PTA, and many other community organizations. After raising her children, she was a member of the Senior Companion Program of Suffolk County, NY for over 10 years.
In 1996, Kit moved to New London, NH where her parents had lived for many years. Kit became a member of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church of New London. She also became a member of the Mercy Hathaway White Chapter of the DAR.
Kit loved writing and was the author of several magazine articles, works of poetry and children’s stories. Her first book, “Anna Smith Strong and the Setauket Spy Ring” was published in 1990 and was incorporated into the 4th grade curriculum for Long Island history in many schools on Long Island, NY. Her second book, “Timothy and the Acrobat” was published in 1991.
Kit will be remembered for her values of honesty and simplicity, for her hobbies of singing, writing and dancing, for her enjoyment of flowers and sunshine and for her love of God and her family.
She was predeceased by her husband, George B. Currie in 1980 and by her twin sister, Susan Miyakawa.
Surviving family members include Kit’s brother and sister-in-law, Reade and Virginia Williams of Concord, her three daughters and their spouses, Susan and Jim Burrow of Amherst, NH, Nancy and Geoff Hitzig of Leverett, MA and Carol and Ray Drollinger of Glen Cove, NY, her son Robert Currie of Pensacola, FL, six grandsons, one granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on June 25th, 2011 in Concord. Burial will be at the Old Main Street Cemetery in New London, NH. More specific service details will be announced at a later date.
