Carmella J. Burns Harris was born in Somerville, Massachusetts to Francis Burns and Jenny Gricci Burns. She was surrounded by grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. She had wonderful memories of her extended family and her life in Somerville. Nana was a devoted daughter, caring for her mother until the end of her life. She also took excellent care of her brother Francis, always keeping him a part of family celebrations and advocating for him with doctors and caretakers. For a small person, she packed a punch, and was unafraid to stand up for herself or those she loved.
She was a loving wife to Paul for 68 years. They were inseparable. She was so proud of her six sons, Tommy in heaven and the 5 boys here. Nana always spoke with gratitude of her wonderful friends in Somerville and her co-workers at Catholic Charities, Juleen, Ronnie, Mary and Judy. She gave comfort and support to the children she cared for through Catholic Charities and the children she took into her home.
We were all worried when Nana agreed to move to Contoocook, New Hampshire in 1993. But, in her usual fashion, she made a wonderful circle of friends and thrived. Her love of flowers and gardening was well known. She could bring any plant back to life. She was a part of The Golden Group, very proud of being the Queen of the Red Hat Society, and did amazing scrapbooking. Her albums will be cherished.
She told us always of how lucky and blessed she was with her wonderful neighbors in Contoocook, Linda and Jim, Dottie, and Pat, just to name a few. She seemed to know the whole town. Nana was so proud of her husband and his untiring work with the VFW.
In the last few years, Nella spent time in Port Orange, Florida at her “mobile mansion.” She had dear friends there, especially Jeanne, who will miss her terribly. Nana loved unconditionally her grandchildren and enjoyed times with each great-grandchild that came along. Nella has been a vibrant, grateful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be remembered with great love and missed always.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nella’s memory to the Asperger/Autism Network (AANE) or to Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress (MDSC.org.)
