Bob was born September 9, 1938 in Alliance, Ohio to Robert Jesse McCallum and Beulah Zellers McCallum. He graduated from Mount Union College in 1960 where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, and received his MBA in Marketing from Capital University in 1983. He served in the US Navy for four years with a tour of duty in the Far East on board the destroyer, USS Frank Knox. He was appointed to a course at the U. S. Naval College.
Bob worked in sales and marketing for Federal Glass in Columbus and Anchor Hocking in Lancaster, Ohio until his retirement. Despite a car accident at the age of forty that resulted in paraplegia, he maintained an extremely active lifestyle.
He was a long-term member and past president of the Berwick Kiwanis Club and Toastmasters in Columbus. He was in the Active Naval Reserve Officers Association, president of Courage, Inc., and organized the National Hall of Fame for Persons with Disabilities. Bob served as a board member and interim head of Transportation Resources Incorporated of Columbus, was a legislative lobbyist for the League Against Child Abuse to the Ohio State Legislature, and served on the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, as well as on the Columbus Mayor's Council on Interracial Relations.
Bob was a long-time supporter of the Columbus Symphony, Opera, Columbus Jazz community and the Mount Union football team, enjoying many a game from his wheelchair on the sidelines.
Bob is survived by his brother, Thomas McCallum, M.D. and his wife Nicky McCallum of Riverton, Wyoming, their son J. Reid McCallum of Gunnison, Colorado; his sister Joy McCallum of Pasadena, California, her daughters Kathryn Yadley of Pasadena, California, and Gwynne Yadley and husband Gabriel Vandervort and their son Nicolas A. Vandervort of Montrose, California.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, September 16, 2011 at Westminster-Thurber Community, 717 Neil Avenue, Columbus, OH with Chaplain Marc Arni officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
An additional visitation will be held from 10-11am Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home, 75 S. Union Ave., Alliance, OH 44601.
