Richard Louis Bergmann departed this life for his heavenly home on Friday, June 24, 2011.Richard was born May 12, 1923 in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Carl A. and Martha Estella (Bodikar) Bergmann. Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years Gladys Mallett Bergmann. He is survived by two sons, Bruce (Dora) Bergmann of Dublin, Ohio and Charles (Carol) Bergmann of Boyds, Md, two granddaughters, Kathryn (Donald) Marshall of Sunol, Ca. and Kristin (Nicholas) Bergmann of Pasadena, Ca.; and a great grand-son, Emery Marshall. He was preceded in death by his sister Verna Mae McCarty and three brothers: James Bergmann, Elmer Bergmann and his twin, Robert Bergmann. Richard was a graduate of Columbus South High School, and The Ohio State University, College of Engineering. He was an active member of Parkview United Methodist Church and held several church offices. He was a member of the Westgate Masonic Lodge and the Buckeye Ramblers camping group. During his long career, Richard worked as an electrical engineer at Janitrol, Ranco, CVI and PHPK. He held two US Patents for his work on thermostats.
Richard lived a life of giving, touching the lives of countless others through his volunteer work. For many years Richard and Gladys were dedicated volunteers at the Open Shelter, helping the homeless. They also volunteered at the West Side Free Store Ministries, which they helped establish and Richard served as Treasurer until his death. Most recently, Richard was a volunteer at Mount Carmel West Hospital.
Richard’s generous gifts of his time and talents garnered the recognition of the community. Honors for his community service included the Buchanan Award in 1996, the Doctors Hospital Golden Achievement award in 1997, the Columbus Dispatch Outstanding Community Service Award in 1999, and the JC Penny First Link Golden Rule Award in both 1999 and 2000.
The family will receive friends at SCHOEDINGER HILLTOP CHAPEL, 3030 West Broad Street on Tuesday, June 28 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm., where a Masonic Service will begin at 7:30 pm. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 29 at 10:30 am, at Parkview United Methodist Church, 344 S. Algonquin Ave, Columbus, Ohio. Pastor Denise Turpin will officiate. Calling hours will be at the church, one hour prior to service. Burial will be in Green Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Richard’s name to the Westside Free Store Ministries at 61 South Powell Ave, Columbus, Ohio 43204.
