“Nothing can dim the light that shines from within.” Maya Angelou When thinking about Raymond J. Lewis, June 12, 1965 – April 22, 2022, it’s hard not to believe that this sentiment wasn’t written specifically about him. Ray passed away from cancer. Every person who knew Ray, or as he was lovingly called, Mosey and Raymo, remembers his defining trait as being a kind, gentle soul, with a great smile. While Ray loved many things: his wife Peg, their cats – especially Sweetie who passed away days after his passing - his beta fish, brother John, sister-in-law Judy and his niece Faith along with his brother Tom and sister-in-law Anne as well as nieces and nephews, Zach, Ava (deceased) Evelyn, Henry and Gigi and his big extended family, we all know he is finding great joy being reunited with his beloved mother and father, Dianne and Jack. Following in the footsteps of his parents, and out to beat his brothers whenever possible, Ray honed his golf skills becoming a Class A PGA of America professional. While he played for the golf teams at Bexley High School and Hillsdale College, his biggest source of pride was being a member of the 1983 Bexley High School Basketball State Championship team. Those teammates were his sports brothers who, even though he didn’t get to see them often, meant as much to him as anyone except of course for his Hillsdale College Alpha Tau Omega fraternity brothers. WS Gilbert wrote, “It’s love that makes thee world go around”, and if that’s true, the world spun a little faster with Ray in it. Ray’s love for his Hillsdale College classmates and fraternal brothers was joyful and momentous. ATO’s brotherhood’s unmatched force of nature was a special time in I’ve for many. Ray’s passing causes each of us to remember where we came from and be thankful that Ray was part of those memories. We can all learn much from the way Ray lived his life. He would tell us to love those in our life unconditionally because they are all that matter. Ray and Peg have lived in Bradenton, Florida for over 30 years and took many cruises throughout the Caribbean. But, coming back home to Columbus, even in the summer, still required sweatshirts and an occasional outdoor fire. We will miss Raymond immensely, his many funny quirks and just knowing that he is no longer just a phone call or text away. Calling hours are Friday, June 3rd from 3pm-6pm @ SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST - 1740 Zollinger Rd. Upper Arlington, OH 43221 followed by Interment Service Saturday June 4th at 10am @ Union Cemetery Mausoleum 3349 Olentangy River Rd. Columbus, OH 43202. Soon after the service on June 4th there will be a celebration of Ray’s life hosted by his Hillsdale friends in the Nicklaus Room at New Albany Country Club from 1 – 4 pm.
