Paul Steven Helwagen, beloved uncle and brother, passed away on February 28, 2019. He was born on December 13, 1955 in Chillicothe, OH, to loving parents Mary Elizabeth (née Carle) and Paul George Helwagen. He truly lived his life as a Good Samaritan, opening his home to strangers and helping friends financially.
Paul graduated from Circleville High School in 1974 and moved to Columbus in 1977.
He helped care for his niece and nephew in their early years, watching over them while their parents were at work. He often took them on trips to parks, COSI, the Ohio History Center, the movies, or on a quick jaunt for a Wendy's Frosty.
Paul was an avid movie-watcher, particularly classic Hollywood films. He had an expansive knowledge of Columbus and could describe old businesses and street names long after they were gone. He also had a warm, baritone singing voice, but didn't share that with the public often.
He was a caretaker for his mother too, helping her live as many of her later years as possible in the home she loved. Paul was a gentle man who believed everyone deserved a second chance. By his generosity and care, he made the world a better place.
He is survived by his sister, Janet, his brother-in-law, John, his niece, MaryKate, his nephew and godson, John, his aunts Linda and Judy, his uncle, Buddy, and several other relatives and friends.
Services will be held at the Schoedinger East Chapel on Monday, March 25th.
