Nancy was born in Columbus, Ohio to the late Dr. Hazard Charles and Mary Martha (Macklin) Holdren. She grew up in Westerville, Ohio graduating from Westerville High School in 1961. Nancy had many childhood friends and those friendships endured the test of time. She and her kindergarten friends, affectionately known as the "Cabin Girls," continued to travel to the cabin twice a year. Oh how she’ll miss those trips! And she was always laughing it up with her best friend of 65+ years, Betty, until the very end.
Nancy graduated from the Riverside - White Cross School of Nursing in 1964. Shortly thereafter she began working at The Ohio State University Medical Center as an RN. She spent most of her career working in infectious disease care and was on the front lines when the AIDS epidemic began. Her experience with the LGBT+ community throughout the epidemic shaped her in a way that forever impacted her life. She retired from OSU in 1998 and remained a faithful Buckeye until her passing.
Nancy married Maynard G. Slack, Jr. ("Rusty") on June 24, 1972 at the Church of the Messiah in Westerville, Ohio. He passed away on April 10, 2019 leaving a huge hole in her heart. Together they raised two children, Shon (Amy) Slack and Heather (Gregory) Zarichny both of Lewis Center, Ohio. They were also the proud grandparents of five boys, Shane, Jacob and Evan Slack and Ty and Max Zarichny. Nancy loved her grandsons fiercely and would talk your ear off for hours about all of their various accomplishments and adventures if you would let her. In fact, she almost never stopped talking. About anything. It was part of her charm.
Nancy's huge heart and incredible sense of humor made it almost impossible not to love her. She spent almost every Friday night of the last 30+ years eating dinner at various restaurants in the Columbus area with her "Friday Night Group." These friends became family and she loved them dearly.
In 2022, Nancy moved to the Polaris Community, a 55 and over residence, and was living her best life! She made wonderful friends and discovered a love for music trivia chair volleyball. She will miss all of the adventures and new possibilities she discovered in her time there.
In keeping with her wishes there will not be a viewing or funeral service. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
