Matthew was a Boy Scout and a 2006 graduate of Gahanna Lincoln High School, where he played and refereed soccer. He graduated from Ohio University on June 10, 2010 with a B.S. in Geography. Matthew was a member of the Geography Club and graduated with honor chords from the Geography Society. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta and through the fraternity was involved in many charitable functions in Athens, which included the chairing of the Relay for Life race.
Matthew was baptized and confirmed at Stonybrook United Methodist Church in Gahanna. He loved playing his three guitars every day, with his favorite being the 6 string that his late grandmother gave to him. Matthew was a very loving, generous, caring, responsible, independent, kind young adult. All of these traits were demonstrated through his charity work and his completion of the Tough Mudder competitive event in Cleveland this spring. Time spent with friends and family meant a lot to him. Matthew was a beloved son and loving brother who will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Matthew was preceded in death by his grandmother, Kathleen Elaine (Norris) Underwood. Matthew will be deeply missed by his loving parents, Ronald and Nancy (Underwood) Burson; brother, Andrew Burson; maternal grandfather, Melvin Underwood; paternal grandparents, Herbert and Pauline Burson; aunts and uncles, David (Debbie) Underwood, Diana (Robert) Haman and John Burson; four cousins; his beloved cat, Sweet Pea; and many friends from Ohio University and Gahanna Lincoln H.S.
The family will receive friends Sunday, June 17, 2012 from 4-7 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL, 1051 E. Johnstown Road, Gahanna, where the funeral service will be held Monday, June 18 at 11:30 a.m. Dr. Gary W. Exman officiating. Interment will follow at Mifflin Cemetery.
