Mary Elizabeth (Bowes) Teach passed away peacefully at Kobacker House on September 11, 2023 surrounded by her daughters. Mary was born in 1934 in Lancaster, Ohio and was the daughter of George and Mary Lucille Bowes. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers Carroll, Patrick and James Bowes; a niece and several nephews. She is survived by her daughters, Pamela O’Hara, Susan Williams (David), Judy Edwards and Patricia Teach; grandchildren Sean O’Hara, Merritt and Benjamin Williams, Andrew Edwards, and Justin and Amelia Miller; and many nephews, nieces and great nephews and great nieces.
Mary graduated from St. Mary’s High School and then Mount Carmel School of Nursing in 1956. Her Nursing career spanned 43 years of which the majority of time was spent at Mt. Carmel Hospital where she was a Neonatal Care Certified Nurse and Head Nurse of the NICU. She worked the last 10 years of her career on the Mother Infant Unit at Riverside Methodist Hospital, enjoying working with the mothers and babies. Mary was the Family Care Unit’s nominee for Nursing Excellence in Patient Family Education, Leadership and Clinical Practice. In addition, for many years she taught Neonatal Resuscitation and CPR for providers even after she retired in 1999.
Known for her sense of humor and giving spirit, Mary will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Mary’s family asks that she be remembered for the joy she brought to others in life not the sadness of her passing. Mary’s greatest pride in life was her 4 daughters. As a mother she guided, instructed and disciplined her children all while providing them with a sense of security and love. She stressed the importance of education in becoming self-sufficient, contributing members of society. Mary really enjoyed giving and entertaining. She delivered many self-decorated cakes and cookies to family and friends throughout the years and always had family (especially grandkids) leave her home with a bag of goodies from “Mary’s mini-mart”. Her Fourth of July Parties and Christmas luncheons for “the hens” were memorable. Mary was a long-time parishioner of St. Agatha church where she participated in the Women’s Club as a young woman and the Bereavement Committee in her retirement.
