Marianne Elizabeth Ruane

Marianne McDermott Ruane, age 91, died January 11, 2021, at inpatient hospice, Kobacker House, in Columbus, OH. Preceded in death by her husband Joseph M. Ruane, eldest son Joseph V., and brother Vincent McDermott. Survived by her daughter Marianne (Kenneth) Tamms, of Dublin, OH, and her son John P. Ruane, of Wilton, CT; sister Arlene C. (James) Gibbons; sister-in-law Rose McDermott; grandchildren Lauren Ruane (Ryan) Lee, Justin J. (Heather) Ruane, Isabel Ruane (fiancé Luke O'Connor), Christopher J. Tamms, Jennifer (Brendan) Prendeville, Conor P. Tamms, and Katherine Tamms; great-grandchildren James, William, and Mallory Prendeville, Carter and Owen Lee; and numerous nieces and nephews whose lives she enriched. Marianne grew up in New Jersey and graduated #1 in her class with a Bachelor of Math degree from Caldwell University. She founded a Montessori School in Millburn, NJ, and enjoyed a long career as a kindergarten and first grade teacher at Brayton School in Summit, NJ. Marianne was recognized by the Governor of NJ as Teacher of the Year in 1988. She will be remembered for her generosity, strident opinions, and lifelong concern for the voiceless.
