Photographer, car enthusiast, avid fisherman, and long-time union member Larry Eugene Markin (Papa), 87, of Columbus, passed away peacefully and quietly as he wished in his beloved home, Monday, October 31, 2022.
Larry was born July 14, 1935 in McArthur, Ohio to the late Emmett and Arah Markin, who then placed him, as an infant, in a dresser drawer to sleep. From these humble beginnings, the family made their way to Toledo, Ohio where Larry found a career at his employer of over 45 years, Toledo Scale (later, Mettler Toledo), the career he retired from in the summer of 2000, minus some returns for consulting work because the place wasn't the same without him. As the proud father of eight children, leading to a series of station wagons and a custom-made dinner table, Larry was always active and supportive throughout their lives, including serving thirteen years as a member of the Northland (High School) Instrumental Music Parents Association (NIMPA). While his career and kids certainly kept him busy, he still found time to indulge his love of travel, visiting everything from the shores of Lakes Erie and Michigan to the Gulf Coast of Florida, from Tennessee to Myrtle Beach to New Orleans, from Switzerland to Mexico to China to the Caribbean, and still getting home in time for a hot cup of coffee and a chance to watch his beloved Buckeyes or a low-budget '80s movie on the biggest TV he could find. Throughout these journeys of space and life, Larry, with an unflagging sense of humor and an insatiable curiosity, would always stop to share a story or strike up a conversation with long-time acquaintances or total strangers alike. If you were not a friend of Larry Markin, it is only because you never met him. His dedication, knowledge, kindness, logic, hard-work, and love will be greatly and deeply missed by all, although he is sure to enjoy finally discovering what comes next.
Larry is survived by brother, Bill (Sandy) Markin and brother-in-law Donald (Brigette) McGhee; his children, Kimberly Wieling, Richard "Steve" (Jacquelyn Manders) Markin, Cheryl Pinney, Linda Hunt, David (Shay) Markin, Wendy Sipes, and Elizabeth (Matthew) Hysell; and daughter-in-law, Cindy Markin; as well as twenty-two grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. As he would tell you, no, he was not Catholic.
In addition to his parents, Larry is preceded in death by his greatly loved and missed wife of 58 years, Joyce McGhee Markin, who, now that they are reunited, will no doubt remind him to get out of his chair, brothers Dick and Roger Markin, and his son, Larry Eugene, Jr.
Family will receive friends Sunday, November 6, 2022 from 1 to 5 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER NORTH CHAPEL, 5554 Karl Rd., where a funeral service will be held Monday, November 7, 2022 at 12 p.m. Interment will follow at Pioneer Cemetery.
