John was born on June 19, 1931 in Lancaster, Ohio to the late John and Goldie Cooney. He was a graduate of Lancaster High School and started his teaching degree at Ohio State University. While in college, John was drafted into the Army in 1951 and served in the Korean War. After his military career, John went back to Ohio State University and completed his teaching degree. John started teaching in 1955 in Columbus Public Schools and would do so for the next 30 years until his retirement. After his retirement, John started taking care of his mom and worked with NNEMAP food pantry. He was an active member with the Linden Lutheran Church. John also enjoyed cruises and gardening.
John is survived by his dear friends, Jay Cleeland, Robert Long and Jane Smith.

A private service will be held to honor John where he will be laid to rest next to his mom at Glen Rest Memorial Estate. Services were entrusted to Advantage by Schoedinger North.
