Joan Marie Hawkins

Joan Marie Gabbert Hawkins of Upper Arlington, Ohio passed away peacefully on November 25, 2015 at First Community Village in Upper Arlington. A graveside service will be held on Monday, November 30 at 10:00 am at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville, Ohio. A memorial service will be conducted in The Chapel at First Community Village, 1800 Riverside Drive, Upper Arlington on Monday, November 30 at 2:30 pm. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. She was born on November 9, 1933 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts to Kathryn and Woodson Gabbert. She attended a number of schools while her father was in the military service during World War II and graduated from Cambridge, Ohio High School in 1951. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education Degree from Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio in 1955. She taught in elementary schools in Cleveland, Ohio; Moundsville, West Virginia; Ashland, Kentucky; and North Canton, Ohio. And, she worked as a Reference Librarian in North Canton, Ohio. She was a member of the FAD Sorority at Muskingum University and the P.E.O. Sorority locally. Joan was an active member of several churches in the various communities in which she lived. And, she was a life-long avid reader. Joan is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Earl; daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and Paul Devlin of Baldwinsville, New York and Colleen and Jeffrey Heacock of New Concord, Ohio. Also surviving are grandchildren Shaun and Casey Devlin, and Megan and Justin Heacock, as well as one brother Jack Gabbert of Carmel, Indiana; one sister Linda (Paul) Puffenberger of Ft. Myers, Florida; one sister-in-law Dolores Hileman of Westerville; and several nieces and nephews. Joan was preceded in death by her parents. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the P.E.O. Sorority, 3700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50312-2899; Alzheimer's Association, Central Ohio Chapter, 1379 Dublin Road, Columbus, Ohio 43215; or a charity of the donor's choice.
