Herbert Johnston died on August 17 after a short illness. He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Jeanne, his children, Jeffrey and Christine (Steven Glaser), his best granddaughter, Nina M. Glaser, and many nieces and nephews. Herb was born August 9, 1928 in East Cleveland, Ohio to Mabel Nicely Johnston and Harry Charles Johnston. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Jerry, Edwin and Mary. He graduated from Sebring High School and attended Virginia Military Institute and Ohio University, graduating in 1949. He worked at the Glidden Company in Cleveland before finding his professional home at Battelle Memorial Institute in 1952. There he managed the polymer science group, working on coatings and adhesives. He holds 18 patents, 6 of which relate to the early development of xerography. He rose to the position of and retired as Vice President of Industrial Business Development. He retired from Battelle in 1992, and continued consulting and mentoring others there for more than a decade after. He loved Battelle; he believed in its mission and was always a champion of Battelle. He was active in First Community Church and the Columbus community. He loved living in Columbus and cheered its growth, its people, the arts, and his neighborhood of Upper Arlington. He was a super Buckeye football fan, holding season tickets for 50+ years. He was devoted to his late dog Buddy. He was a loyal friend to many and a beloved husband and father.
