Helen L. (Hamner) Walter, 84, of Columbus, entered into eternal rest Thursday, August 18, 2011. She was born March 7, 1927 in Portsmouth, Ohio, the middle of three daughters. Helen moved to Columbus her senior year and was a 1944 graduate of North High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Robert D. Walter.
Raising her four children and dedicating her life to caring for her family were the greatest accomplishments in her life. Helen was an ultimate caregiver for over 20 years to her husband, his parents, and her mother. Helen was a member of St. Timothy Church where she volunteered with the bereavement committee and was known as the “green bean casserole lady”. Helen loved sports from a young age and enjoyed playing tennis, golf, and bowling. She cherished family camping trips, girl’s trips with her granddaughters, and time spent with her grandson, Teddy. Helen enjoyed knitting and reading, and will be remembered for her strong will, fabulous sense of humor, and the support and encouragement she always showed her children.
Preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Robert D. Walter, Sr.; parents, Lee and Margaret Hamner; and daughter-in-law, Cheryl Walter. Helen will be missed by her loving children, Robert Walter, Jr., Teresa Walter, Michael Walter, and Timothy (Corinne) Walter; grandchildren, Wendy Lynn (Stephen) Tabor, Kristen Walter Newsome (Brian Newsome), and Edward Pierce Walter; 3 great-granddaughters; 1 great-grandson; sisters, Betty Hays and Dot Everson; and many nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends Sunday, August 21, 2011 from 2-5 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd., Columbus, OH. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the chapel on the grounds of Resurrection Cemetery, 9571 N. High St., Lewis Center, OH, Rev. Timothy M. Hayes, Celebrant.
