Gerald D. "Jerry" Schmidt, 80, of Westerville, passed away on February 24, 2017. He was born on January 15, 1937 in Romeo, MI to Walter E. and Laura (Erdman) Schmidt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Martha L. Hammond, and brothers Theodore and Richard Schmidt.
Jerry graduated from Capital University with Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Business Administration degrees in accounting. He worked for 30 years at Capital University, where he was the Executive Assistant to the VP of Resource Management. He was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Ohio Association of College and University Business Officers, and the Columbus Symphony Chorus. Jerry was on the Board of Directors for Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio, the former President of Capital Luncheon Club, and was the treasurer for the Board of Trustees for Six Pence School. He was also a devoted member of the North Community Lutheran Church where he was the treasurer for the Audit and Music Committees, and was active in the Senior Choir and the Men's Breakfast Group. In his free time, he enjoyed singing, golf and reading.
Jerry and his beautiful tenor voice will be greatly missed by his wife of 54 years Bonnie (Moreland) Schmidt; son David M. (Bert Ponce) Schmidt; grandsons Tyler and Brett Hammond and Jake and Adam Schmidt; son-in-law Justin Hammond; sister Karen Black; brothers Walter A. (Carolyn) Schmidt and Michael Schmidt; sisters-in-law Gladys and Susan Schmidt; brothers-in-law Paul (Brenda) Moreland and Victor (Judy) Moreland; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 3-7pm Friday, March 3, 2017 at the SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 6699 North High Street. The funeral service for Jerry will be at 11am Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the North Community Church, 114 Morse Road with Reverend Dr. Walter A. Schmidt and Pastor Chris Adams officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gerald D. and Bonnie M.
