Born April 13, 1939, in Quaker City, Ohio, to the late Nellie and Paul Brill. His Father died when he was 3 years old so he was raised by his late Great Aunt and Uncle, Mill and Blaine Day. Graduating from a one room schoolhouse in Eastern Ohio, he took the life values and the practical skills he learned and ventured to the “big” city, by attending the Ohio State University where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Physics and a Master’s in Computer Science. It was the Ohio State University where he met his wife of 62 years, Nancy Brill.
He served in the Reserves for the Army National Guard and then embarked on his 29-year career as a Senior Program Manager at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio where his achievements were numerous. He had extensive experience in the software development process and was a constant advocate for process improvement. In the 1980’s, he pioneered internal software engineering projects at Battelle seeking ways to improve upon software engineering practices and their underlying methodologies and technologies. With his drive to seek out new procedures, he became the Director of the Software Engineering Process Group (SEPG), a group of senior software engineers charged with defining and executing the division’s internal SEPG program. Concurrently he was also Director of the
Software Quality Assurance tasked with establishing and updating division policies and procedures for the division’s software engineering projects.
Among his many projects, he was responsible for the development of the Marine Safety Information System for the US Coast Guard. In addition, he served as the chief architect for the design of the Vessel Inspection Information System to support the US Coast Guard’s Commercial Vessel Safety program. Furthermore, he invented and led the development of the Automated Construction of Transaction Systems (ACTS), an application generator that functions as an online transaction application, which was a robust development capable of supporting the creation of various large online, transaction processing applications. As Manager of technical and business development for computer-based systems, he was instrumental in the development of the Automated Roadway Management System (ARMS) used on tollways where AVI technologies identified and classified vehicles for purposes of computing and collecting tolls. He provided technical leadership in developing logistics management information systems to the Air Force Logistics Command and developing information systems to the Air Force Logistics Command (AFLC) to developing information systems for Florida’s Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services. He served as the chief architect for the design of the Vessel Inspection Information System to support the US Coast Guard’s Commercial Vessel Safety program. Throughout his career, he authored and coauthored numerous reports and publications in the areas noted above.
After retiring from corporate life, he pursued his earlier passion in Numismatics, the study of or collection of currency and coins. He established his own company, Majestic Coins. Traveling around the region at various coin shows and developing many relationships with fellow Numismatists, he gained his fellow collectors’ respect and trust as they relied on his vast knowledge of the history and his expertise in “all things” coins. As his company and expertise grew, he was elected Bourse Chairman of the Ohio Chapter of Numismatist and created the Ohio State Annual Coin Show.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Brill, his two children, daughter, Darcie Brill, son, Craig Brill and his favorite feline buddy, Chloe. Evan will be greatly missed by his family and friends but know he is in a better place where pain no longer exists and memories are embraced and last forever…this is not goodbye but see you later…
