Elizabeth “Betty” (Petkwitz) Martz, 77, of Columbus, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010. Betty, also known as Betty Lou, was born Oct. 13, 1932 in Dayton. She was a graduate of Julienne High School. Upon graduation, Betty worked as a stenographer at Wright Patterson AFB, where she met her husband, John Martz. They moved to Columbus in 1955, where they were charter members of St. Phillips Church and later St. Anthony Church. Betty was an active volunteer in the church, and was the first female lay minister in the parish. She was a Camp Fire Girl leader and worked at the polls every year. She loved attending weddings and social events at the Polish Club in Dayton, family gatherings at Schantz Ave., and summers at Palmer Lake in Michigan. Preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Jane Petkwitz; brother, Paul, and husband, John, in 1995;. Betty will be missed by her loving children, Linda Martz (Steve Howell), John (Cindy) Martz, Leah (Drew) Hood and Emery; Kendra (Adam) Schafer and Lennon; Tom (Carla) Martz, Erin and John; Jim (Patty) Martz, Joe, Elayne, and Kerilynn; Robert (Karen) Martz, Erik and Lara; and Cathy Martz; sister, Norma (Tom) Doerfler; Aunt Thelma, sister-in-law Ruth Peck; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special friends Greg and Nancy Thatcher. Betty’s children and grandchildren were the highlight of her life. She was very proud of her church and volunteer work, including the Gillie’s Health Center. She truly had a big heart. Family will receive friends from 2-5 pm, with a prayer service at 4:30 pm, Sunday, January 10, 2010 at SCHOEDINGER NORTH CHAPEL, 5554 Karl Rd., Columbus. Mass of Christian Burial 10 am Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 1300 Urban Dr., Columbus, Fr. Thomas Petry, celebrant. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
