David grew up on the west side of Columbus witness to its transformation from a small farming society to a developing urban fabric. He graduated from West High School where he was the school pianist, a track athlete, and the morning radio announcer. For 10 years he served his country in the Marine Corp. and National Guard. He then held a series of jobs selling anything from wigs to telephone systems to ice cream. To the benefit of many, he then decided to focus his salesmanship on pizza.
As the proprietor of Pisa Pete’s Pizza, David created a unique style of pizza and toasted subs delivered to the Short North for over twenty years. Regular customers loved him for his welcoming personality, and his jovial nature including both the unique quips and the more reliable jokes. “Anyone I can, easy people twice, and you’re next!”
In 1973 David met the love of his life and married Bonnie (Knight). Together they raised their two children, Kathleen and Michael in Hilliard Ohio where they resided until 2017.
David’s jokes and storytelling consistently charmed the friends and coworkers of his wife and children, even if they themselves were rolling eyes in the background. David’s sleight of hand “miracles” were impressive to the casual observer and magical to little kids who found their ears suddenly full of coins. Everyone who met David enjoyed and remembered David.
After retiring from the pizza business in 2003 David continued pursuing a developing passion for gardening. With the help of his wife and their close friend, they created a magazine worthy garden landscape at their home in Hilliard. In the later years David’s favorite activity became babysitting and spending time with his granddaughters as they came into the world.
David will be greatly missed by
His wife of 48 years Bonnie (Knight) McLaughlin, Daughter Kathleen (Troy) Carlson, Son Michael (Natalie) McLaughlin, granddaughters Amelia Carlson, Coraline, Hazel, Agatha McLaughlin, as well as many extended family and friends.
