Charles A. Smith, age 81 of Columbus, passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2011 following numerous health issues. Charles was born and raised in Columbus, son of the late Charles Smith and Viola Esther Smith. Also preceded in death by his wife, Emma Jane Smith, son, Chuck Smith, and brother, William “Bill” Smith. Following high school, Charles proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served during the Korean War. Upon his return home, Charles attended The Ohio State University. He then later went to work and eventually retired from the City of Columbus where he worked as a water inspector. He truly enjoyed work and never missed a day. Charles was very charismatic and outgoing man who had a great sense of humor. He was a tremendous history buff, especially anything to do with WWII, and was also a sports enthusiast, favoring The University of Michigan. He will be missed by his granddaughter, Cheryl “Charlie” Clark; brother, Jim Wright; and many other extended family members and dear friends. Charles’ family would like to thank David Harris for all the help and support he showed to Charles throughout the years. Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 P.M. Monday, September 26, 2011 at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens Chapel, 5600 E. Broad St. Family will receive friends from 3-5 P.M. Sunday at SCHOEDINGER EAST CHAPEL, 5360 E.
