Charles Sherman Chope, life time resident of Upper Arlington (UA Class of ’82) passed away Wednesday April 2, 2025 following a courageous battle with bladder cancer. Charlie, as he was known by friends and family, was born on June 11, 1963 to the late H. Roy and Lois (Sherman) Chope.
Charlie’s life passions included his family, politics and faith. Charlie loved to boast about his nieces and nephews many accomplishments in academics and careers. His political and government interests led him to run for U.S. House of Representatives in 2014 (Ohio’s 15th District). At the center of his faith was his connection with Upper Arlington Lutheran Church. It gives the family great comfort to know that, at the time of his passing, he was surrounded by prayer and support of his life time UALC pastor.
Charlie endured many challenges in his life including a 1998 violent car-jacking that resulted in paraplegia. Despite his physical health limitations, Charlie never sought pity – he lived life independently and on his own terms. Simple joys in his life included driving his corvette and discussing (debating) politics with anyone and everyone.
Charlie will be greatly missed by his sister Amy and brother-in-law and close friend Nick Whalen; nieces and nephews, Jenny (John) Delva, David (Morgan) Whalen, Amanda (James) Willey and Danny (Ana) Whalen: great-nieces and nephews, Jack and Juliette Delva, Hudson and Blair Whalen and many close friends.
In addition to his parents, H Roy and Lois (Sherman) Chope, Charlie was preceded in death by his brother David Roy Chope and sister Elizabeth Ann (Betsy) Chope.
Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST, 1740 Zollinger Road, Upper Arlington, Ohio 43221, where a visitation will be held from 9:30 AM until time of the service at 10:30 AM. Interment at Union Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Upper Arlington Lutheran Church-Lytham, 2300 Lytham Road, Columbus, Ohio 43220.
