Carl kept close contact with friends and family in Sweden, the United States and throughout the world all of his adult life. At home in the past few months he particularly enjoyed visits from friends, Michael and Faith Weisel and Ake and Ingrid Hellstrom; and the kindness and company of caregiver Linda Pelphrey.
Carl handed down many stories of growing up in Sweden in simpler times. As a young man, he enjoyed participating in track and field events, orienteering, marksmanship competitions, dressage riding and hiking.
A graduate of the Civil Engineering program at Chalmers University, Gothenberg, Sweden, Carl came to the United States in 1956 aboard the ocean liner Queen Mary. His plan was to work at an engineering firm in Harrisburg, PA for two years before returning to Sweden. That plan changed when he met Ann Meikle through the Harrisburg chapter of the Appalachian Hiking Club.
Carl and Ann married in 1959 and moved to Columbus, Ohio soon after. In 1966, he started Eriksson Engineering, Ltd., a Civil Engineering firm in Columbus. In its 38 years in business, his company designed many bridges and highways throughout Central Ohio. Among other design innovations, he pioneered the use of prestressed concrete on Central Ohio roadways.
For years, Carl attended annual reunions of North American graduates of Chalmers University, held in major cities all over the United States.
He was a long-time member and past President of the Board of The Scandinavian Club of Columbus, Ohio.
Carl will be missed on both sides of the ocean by those who knew and loved him.
