I don't have a memory of Ben BUT I'm reaching out to the family, especially his mother. I lost my only daughter 13 years ago. She was 27. I also have a love for gardening. I would like to plant something in his honor. What ingredients did Ben use the most?  That's what I would like to teach my 8 year old granddaughter to cultivate. To the family, my deepest condolences & prayers.

I met Ben during my culinary school internship at Deer Creek State Park in 2010.  He was my first chef boss, served as my mentor in the kitchen, and became a good friend that I followed and continued to work for over the years.  He was a very private person, and although he tried to hide it behind a thinly-veiled rough exterior, he was very kind and thoughtful to the people who were privileged enough to get to know him.  He shared his hobbies and passions with those around him, and always made people feel included.  He gave generously and shared the neat things that had.  I still have some of the kitchen knives he gave me from that first job.  Ben always had some neat project in the works, and took great pride in sharing with people.  Ben was also the kind of person who would never refuse a favor, no matter how big it was, or how ridiculous it seemed.  If you were a friend of Ben’s, you were important, and anything that was important to you, was important to Ben. 

About 5 years ago, my aunt in Cleveland offered me a couple of potted fig trees, and I casually mentioned it to Ben at some point in a random conversation.  Without me asking, he offered to take a day off of work and take a road trip with me to get them.  Ben had a pickup truck, and I did not.  Ben drove from Columbus to Cincinnati to pick me up, and drove us both to Cleveland to pick up the fig trees.  On the way back, we stopped at Andersons in Columbus and bought apple trees to plant in our yards together!  Ben then dropped me off in Cincinnati before driving back home to Columbus .  He then refused to take any of my gas money.  He drove almost 10 hours on a whim, to help a friend with something seemingly unimportant, because it was important to them.

When my daughter was recently in the hospital for an extended stay, Ben asked how he could help us, daily.  He kept me sane by staying up late at night and texting me, distracting me from the reality in front of me.  It helped me to get through the week and focus on caring for my daughter’s needs, without being a complete mess.  It was a great comfort having someone make themselves available 24/7 to talk to, despite having work and his own family to care for.  He was the only friend I talked to that week, and he sacrificed his time and sleep to do it.

Anyone who knew Ben would not be surprised by hearing stories like this.  Ben loved his family, but he also treated his friends like they were his family.  Ben left a positive lasting impact on those who crossed his path, and inspired people to pursue their passions in life as he did.  Thank you for helping to guide me through a couple very difficult periods in my life, and thank you for getting me involved in so many cool hobbies.  My passions and interests will continue to grow with the same zealousness I saw from you, and I will continue to share them with others and include them, as you taught me to do.  May your spirit continue to live on through our actions.  I will miss you.

Florist Choice Bouquet was purchased for the family of Benjamin J. Theis.

I met Ben when he was at Mohican State park lodge.  Ben was an outstanding person all the way around.  We enjoyed many a cigar together.  I'll never forget one night after he got off work we sat outside on the patio and were having cigars,  when we were invaded by 2 skunks who were scrounging popcorn spilled by the guest.  Ben and I at one point had our feet on the table with the skunks underneath eating popcorn.   Both of us were not moving or talking until those 2 wandered off in search of more popcorn!  Every person in the lounge was pressed against the windows making as much noise as they could hoping to get those skunks to spray... they never did!  Ben and I had so many great conversations over the years.  Im sorry if I've rambled on, but he truly was a great person!  

I cant begin to express my condolences to Clare and his family.   Please know you'll be in my thoughts and prayers.

I graduated with Ben in the class of 1995.  I will always remember his positive attitude and big smile.   I never heard him speak negative of anyone in all those years.   This is truly heartbreaking.   My prayers go out to his family.  Heaven has gained an angel that I'm sure will continue to watch over his loved ones.

All through the St. Wendelin School years I can picture Ben as a little boy, half grown fellow, and even his Senior year.  He had the most beautiful eyes…. and if you looked closely, you could see the heart of gold hidden deep inside.  He was a great son, brother, husband and Dad.  I will continue to remember Ben and all of his dear ones in prayer
