Barbara L. Freedy was born April 5, 1959 in Columbus, OH. She graduated from Upper Arlington High School and obtained undergraduate (Phi Beta Kappa) and law degrees from The Ohio State University. After practicing health care law for the West Virginia Attorney General Office (Charleston, WV) she moved to Durham, North Carolina in 1989. Barbara earned a Masters Degree in Health Administration (MHA) from Duke University in 1991. Thereafter she was employed for 27 years at Forsyth Memorial Hospital/Novant Health in Winston Salem, NC. She retired as Director of Certificate of Need (CON) Operations in 2018.
Barb was introduced to her future husband on a blind date in January 1990 while they both were active at Duke University. She and Doug were married in the Duke Chapel on September 1, 1991, and moved to Greensboro, NC. Their son, Cameron, was born in 1993. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, Barb also was a talented violinist. She loved her family and many friends, music, shopping, and Siamese cats.
She was predeceased by her father, Robert J. Freedy, MD on April 2, 2011.
She is survived by her husband, Douglas E. Lemley, MD of Greensboro; son, Cameron R. Lemley of New York, NY; mother, Lucy R. Freedy, MD of Clearwater, FL; brothers: R. Marvin (Sharon) Freedy, MD of Clearwater, FL, John (Melba) Freedy MD, PhD of Charleston, SC and David R. Freedy DMA, of Hilliard, OH; nieces and nephews: Allyson (Stephen Kissler) Freedy, MD, PhD of Denver CO, Robert (Kelly) Freedy of Charleston, SC, Katie Freedy of Durham, NC, Madison Freedy of Charleston, SC and Matthew Freedy of Columbia ,SC.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024 from 4:00-6:00 PM at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST, 1740 Zollinger Rd, Columbus, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 15th, at 10:00 AM, at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST, followed by a graveside service at Union Cemetery.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to the Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA.org), 912 Killian Hill Road SW, Lilburn, Georgia 30047.
