Dr. Alex Fernandez-Pizzi, 73, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on May 22nd, 2023. Born on June 24th, 1949, in Havana, Cuba, Alex moved to the United States in 1959, where he attended the Columbus Academy where his father worked teaching Spanish. Alex completed his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Salamanca, Spain before returning to Columbus, Ohio. There he worked as a general surgeon for 20 years, and an occupational medicine physician for 14 years before his retirement from the medical field to assist in teaching nursing students alongside his wife. He enjoyed many years of boating, motorcycle riding, traveling the world and playing guitar. He took numerous trips to the beach with his family where the recipe for his famous “vitamin drinks” was created and subsequently changed each year. He was a great cook, and legendary for his grilled beef tenderloin. His greatest joy was his time with his family: coaching, going out to local restaurants, and watching movies at home. Dr. Alex Fernandez-Pizzi is survived by his loving wife Katheryn (Riddle) Fernandez, and his triplet sons Andrew (Samantha Hall), Max (Starr Cobryn), and Simon (Monica Chen). Also survived by his sister, Rina Gould, and brother Joaquin Fernandez, brother/sister-in-law John “Mack” & Lori Riddle; niece and nephew Janelle & Matt Guirreri and Rocky & Lisa Riddle, two great nephews Jonny & Henry and two great nieces Mia & Sophia. In addition, Alex enjoyed many loving and long friendships. A visitation will be held from 4-8 pm Friday, May 26th at SCHOEDINGER EAST, 5360 E. Livingston Avenue, Columbus, OH 43232 and from 1-2 pm Saturday, May 27, 2023, followed by a Memorial Service at 2pm. Charitable donations will be accepted in lieu of flowers to help create the Dr. Fernandez Scholarship Fund to assist young men in attending St. Charles Preparatory School at 2010 East Broad Street, Columbus, OH 43209.
