Known as Dr. Orr during his 32 years with Quinco Behavioral Health Systems, now Centerstone, he was a Clinical Psychologist.
Known by longtime and new friends in his later years as Tom or “Lefty,” he, after retirement, took up his youthful moniker given him as a left-handed pitcher.
Life milestones were Butler University graduation in 1952, Master’s Degree from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1953, and a PhD in Psychology at Indiana University in 1960. In the U.S. Army he was a research assistant at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Orr served as President of the Indiana Psychological Association, as Representative of I.P.A. to the American Psychological Association Council, and was appointed to the State Licensing Board in Psychology. He was appointed by the Governor of Indiana as a Sagamore of the Wabash in 1992 for his Humanity in Living, his Loyalty in Friendship, his Wisdom in Council, and his Inspiration in Leadership.
Lefty was an avid White Sox fan who made a hobby later in life of visiting minor league baseball parks. He took great interest in Butler sports events and in the progress of the University.
Tom was a founding and enthusiastic member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus Indiana. He was Humanist.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Lu Kolb Orr; their sons, David Paterson Orr (Gail W. Orr) of Houston, Texas, Daniel Joseph Orr of Bloomington, Indiana, and David’s and Gail’s children, Robert Thomas, Matthew Rutland and Caroline Elizabeth of Houston. His elder sons, Thomas Bruce Orr Jr., and Robert Gordon Orr, preceded him in death.
A Memorial Celebration will be held on Saturday, June 4, in Columbus, Indiana, at the Memory Walk on the Unitarian Universalist Congregation grounds. In lieu of flowers and other gifts, memorial contributions may be made to see list below.
