Lewis Wayne Smith, 86, passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at Willow Crossing Health and Rehab. Lewis was born November 20, 1937 in Bedford, Indiana to parents Wayne and Anna Smith. His mother Anna, passed away at childbirth and he was raised by her sister, Marie.
Lewis was lifelong member of New Hope Christian Church. He served in the National Guard and retired from Cummins after 49 years. Lewis was known in the Edinburgh-Taylorsville area as “The Running Man”. He earned the title for jogging to work every day along highway 31 from Taylorsville to Columbus-a total round trip of 15 miles- all with a cigar in his mouth.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ida Kay Smith; his son-in-law, Steven Baugher; his grandson, Aaron (Khristy) Baugher; and his great-grandchildren, Jacob, Gabriel, Jessica, and Xavier Baugher.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Paul Smith; his daughter, Kathy Baugher; and his granddaughter, Jessica Hope Baugher.
A funeral service for Lewis will be held Wednesday, April 3 at 11 am at New Hope Christian Church with Pastor John Sichting officiating. Burial will follow at Port Williams Cemetery in Williams, Indiana. Friends may gather for visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
