James Robert Newton, 87, of Columbus passed away Monday, July 4, 2022 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Hope. He was born November 6, 1934 in Columbus, Indiana, the beloved son of Homer and Fern (Rhoades) Newton.
Jim’s goal in life was to provide for his family the same way his parents provided for him. He achieved that through a career as a pharmacist.
A graduate of Columbus High School, he attended Hanover College and graduated from Butler University School of Pharmacy. He also served in the United States Army. He was a registered pharmacist for Fishers, Coffman Drug Stores along with Kroger and Haag Drug Company and eventually retired from Columbus Regional Hospital.
Jim was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He enjoyed Indy Car Racing, baseball, and dinner theaters.
Jim is survived by his wife of 64 years, Catheryn (Kay); daughters, Susan (Ronnie Denson), Louisann (Mike) Ayala; and grandsons, Michael, Daniel, Patrick, and Shawn Ayala. He was preceded in death by his father, Homer; and his mother, Fern; and his brother, Michael.
A funeral service for Jim will be held Saturday, July 9 at 12:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Douglas Bauman officiating. Friends may gather for visitation on Friday, July 8 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Myers-Reed Chapel on 25th Street. Memorials in Jim’s name may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana through the funeral home.
