A graduate of Bloomington High School, Bloomington, IN, he attended Indiana University and
served in the United States Navy Reserve, being honorably discharged in 1962.
He came to Columbus as a draftsman for Arvin Automotive in 1956. He later joined Cummins
Engine Co. in 1959, as a Draftsman & Checker and later served as Manager-Corporate Drafting at the
Cummins Technical Center. While at Cummins, he was a member of the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers (ASME) National Standards Committee for Dimensioning and Tolerancing. He pioneered the
development and use of ASME National Dimensioning & Tolerancing Standards Y14.S for Cummins as
corporate engineering drafting practices. He was also active during the Cummins early conversion years
from hard copy engineering drawings to CAD engineering drawing technology.
After retirement from Cummins, he operated a training/consulting business for many years, and
continued to serve as a member of the ASME Dimensioning and Tolerancing sub-committee until 1999,
as well as serving on the ASME National Standards Committee for Gauging and Fixturing until 2003.
He conducted numerous training seminars in the United States, Canada and Europe. He
authored workbooks, and pocket guides used by industry and colleges and continued to conduct
engineering training seminars relative to dimensioning, tolerancing, gauging and measurement until 2006.
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, of Columbus where he was member of the
choir for over 20 years. He had worked part time at the Columbus Area Arts Council, and more
recently as a consultant with Productive Resources Inc. in Columbus. He also was a retired member of
The Republic's editorial panel, contributing many thought provoking opinions. He was a co-owner of
Gooldy & Sons Inc., of Bloomington, Indiana.
He also had enjoyed coaching in the inaugural years of the Columbus PAL tackle football league
in the early 70's. A favorite love was fishing, which gave way later in life in favor of time spent with his
grandchildren.
Bom in Ellettisville, Indiana March 25,1936 he was the son of Layton T. Gooldy and Frances E. Price
Gooldy. He married Janice H. Thrasher May 17, 1958 at Fairview UMC in Bloomington and she survives. He
was preceded in death by his parents; and sons Douglas T. Gooldy in 2007; Gregory S. Gooldy in 2010;
three brothers; Kenneth J. Gooldy in 1976 and R. Newell Gooldy in 1993, Michael Gooldy in 2011.
Other survivors besides his wife include a daughter, Gina M. Perkins; son Bryan M. “Mitch” Gooldy;
grandchildren; Shelby Ann Gooldy, Cody Clouse, Eli Perkins, Luke Perkins and Emily Perkins all of Columbus.
In keeping with Gary’s wishes, cremation is planned. Arrangements were made by Myers-Reed Chapel on 25th St., ColumbusIn In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Make A Wish Foundation, St.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:30 a. m. Wednesday 1-11-12 in Asbury United Methodist Church with Pastor David Blystone and Paul Johnson officiating. Calling will be from 10:00 a. m. until service time at the church.
