Donald Allen Schmidt, 61, of Columbus died Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at his home following a valiantly fought 12 ½ year battle, with little complaint, with a rare cancer, Gastro Intestinal Stromal Tumor.
Donald was born in Indianapolis August 17, 1956, the son of Donald L. and Patricia Sullivan Schmidt. He married Linda McMIllan August 18, 1979 in First Christian Church.
He was Vice-President of Overhead Door, having worked there 38 years until the day of his death. He graduated from I.U. School of Business in 1979. He was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, Stoney Lonesome Motorcycle Club, Harrison Lake Country Club, Life member of I.U. Alumni Club, Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, and Monday Noon Rotary Club.
He loved being in the woods, racing dirt bikes, hiking and backpacking, taking motorcycle trips through Michigan and Tennessee, vacationing at Hilton Head, S.C. and visiting his son in California. He especially loved driving his 1970 GTO and working on his 1970 Chevelle which originally belonged to his grandmother.
He was a Mister fix-it and could fix anything and always very patiently helped anybody with a problem. He was an exceptional husband, father, son and friend.
He is survived by his wife, Linda M. Schmidt; sons, Griffin Schmidt of Los Angeles, California and Collin Schmidt of Columbus; parents, Donald L. and Patricia Schmidt of Columbus; sister, Kimberly Corya Schmidt of Ft. Myers Beach, FL; nephews, Brandon (Carla) Corya of Columbus, Kip Corya of Mesa, AZ, Adam Hawks of Indianapolis; niece, Jacqueline Hawks (Ben) Craig of Dallas, TX; 4 great nieces; brother in law, Rob (Nancy) McMillan of Indianapolis; sisters in law, Ann (Michael) Kin of Indianapolis, Jane (Brian) Hawks of Indianapolis. Preceded in death by grandparents, Dorothy Sullivan Jackson, Charles A. "Rip" Sullivan, John L. Jackson, David G. and Bernice Schmidt.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted 12:00 p.m. Saturday at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church with Father Clem Davis officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to service time at the church. Private inurnment will be at a later date. Honorary pallbearers will be; Perry Andrews, Nolan Bingham, Darren Buffo, Steve Essex, Chris Jewell, Tim Matthews, Richard Newton, Jim Perrin, David Roll, Scott Rugenstein.
