Born in Columbus, Dick was the son of Benjamin Harvey and Mary Helen Kaufman Irwin. He married Roberta Pollitt on January 24, 1960, in Columbus and she survives.
Dick graduated from Columbus High School in 1953 and then graduated from Purdue University in 1958. He had worked for Arvin Industries and later for Esterline-Angus in Indianapolis. He retired as a Manufacturing Engineer from C. R. Industries of Franklin, North Carolina where they manufactured seals for the M1A1 tanks for the U.S. Military. He was a member of First Christian Church.
Some of Dick’s enjoyments included walking in the park, tennis, working with computers and reading. He was stationed at Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio, Texas while he served in the U.S. Air Force.
Dick is survived by his wife, Roberta Pollitt Irwin of Columbus; children, Benjamin Howard (Sherri Anderson) Irwin of Edmonds, Washington, William Edwin Irwin of Columbus and Amy Lynne (Robert Alan) Sharp of Greensboro, North Carolina; his brother, William G. (Kay) Irwin of Hot Springs, Arkansas; and two grandsons, Jacob and Joshua Irwin of Edmonds, Washington.
Dick was preceded in death by his parent and grandparents.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Hathaway-Myers Chapel on Pearl St. with Rev. Howard Boles officiating. Entombment with military honors by the Bartholomew County Honor Guard will follow at Garland Brook Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call from 12 noon until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
