Mrs. Rice was a former hairdresser and telephone operator for Indiana Bell and was a teacher in Eastbrook and Marion school systems from 1962 until her retirement in 1985.
She was a summa cum laude graduate of Taylor University and attended graduate school at Ball State University. She enjoyed genealogy research and was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames, Delta Kappa Gamma sorority and Order of the Eastern Star.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Private inurnment is planned.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana.

Born in Crawford County, Ill., Nov. 13, 1923, Mrs. Rice was the daughter of Frank and Dorotha Holmes VanWinkle. She married Carl W. Rice Nov. 7, 1943, in Warren. He preceded her in death Jan. 30, 2008.
Survivors include a daughter, Victoria R. (Jerry) Ransom of Nashville; a son-in-law, Dan Emrick of Marion; and grandsons, Dr. Jon Brandon Carlson of Detroit, MI, and Matthew Rice Carlson of Seattle, WA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a daughter, Anne Emrick.
