Van Hobert Segars, Sr a proud veteran of the United States Army, passed away Monday, September 26, 2022. The son of the late Hobert Segars and Mamie Sue Laack, Van grew up most of his life in Columbus. He was born September 14, 1949 in Birmingham, Alabama.
At the age of 19, Van was drafted in the United States Army. He valued this service highly and attained the rank of E4 Specialist. As part of this service, he was deployed to Vietnam.
Van is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Shirley; his step-son, Tony Palmerino of Northbridge, Massachusetts; his daughter, Sherry Rumsey (Scott) and son, Van Segars (Corrine) both of Columbus, Georgia. He also had four grandchildren: Tyler Palmerino, Tori Palmerino, Abigail Segars, and Madeline Segars and one great-grandson: AJ Vinroe. Van’s loved ones will remember his love of golf, surfing, Alabama football, and coaching youth sports, where he would often still be greeted as Coach Van.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 29, 2022 from 5-7pm at Striffler-Hamby on Macon Road. A grave site service honoring the life of Van will be held Friday, September 30, 2022 at Parkhill Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia at 2:00PM.
