Thurston was born April 24, 1934 in Columbus, GA; the son of O.D. Yaughn and Annie Mae Watkins. Thurston was raised in Columbus and graduated from Jordan High School. On June 2, 1956 Thurston married the love of his life, Maggie Sue Smith, they were married for 64 years. Thurston served in the U.S. Army for a few years before becoming an accountant. He became self-employed and served the Columbus community for over 50 years. He was a member of Christ Community Church and tried to show Christ-like love to all he came in contact with; he was always willing to help someone in need and he loved the neighborhood he lived in and strived to be a good neighbor. Thurston’s passions involved music, eating sweets, the Atlanta Braves, and photography. Though not a professional photographer, he became a very good amateur photographer. There was however, nothing that compared to love he felt for his family and the time he was able to spend with them, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
