Theo Mathis, 91, of Columbus, died on Friday, November 25, 2016 at St. Francis Hospital. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby Columbus at 2:00pm with Reverend Stephanie Boaz officiating. Burial will follow at Parkhill Cemetery with Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends at Striffler-Hamby on Monday, November 28, 2016 from 5:00-7:00pm.
Mr. Mathis, son of the late Carlos and Eura Hall Mathis, was born September 9, 1925 in Cottonwood, Alabama. He was a WWII Veteran in Germany and served our country honorably as Sergeant for the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force. He retired in September of 1951, after receiving The Purple Heart and The Bronze Star. After his service, Mr. Mathis was active in real estate before serving as Municipal Court Clerk in Georgia for many years before retiring. He was an active member of Morningside Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon and usher. Mr. Mathis was a member of the Mt. Herman Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite of Columbus, Al Sihah Shrine Temple of Macon, Past Commander and Club President 1998 of Columbus/Ft. Benning Shrine Club, Provost Guard Unit, and Department of Georgia Military Order of Purple Heart and National Aide de Camp.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Carl Mathis, Charles Mathis, and Bobby Mathis. Mr. Mathis is survived by his loving wife, Janice Hodges Mathis; sons, Mark H. Mathis of Columbus, Charles H. Mathis of Columbus; sisters, Dorothy Raley of Pittsburg, PA, Mary Evelyn Hodges of Dothan, AL; six grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and many friends and other relatives.
