His funeral service will be held at Wynnton Methodist Church on Saturday August 7th at 11:00am. Visitation will be at the church beginning at 10:00am prior to the service. A family graveside will follow at Parkhill Cemetery.
Steve was born in Columbus, Georgia, the son of Robert and Mildred Smith.
Steve graduated from Jordan High School in 1970. One of his fondest memories was traveling to Washington, D.C. as a trombonist in the Red Jacket Marching Band and performing in the Presidential Inaugural Parade. After attending Columbus College, Steve moved to Atlanta, beginning a 42 year career with Southern Bell, BellSouth and AT&T. Working in close proximity to the Georgia Tech campus, he became a lifelong enthusiast of Yellow Jacket football and basketball. Delving passionately into Atlanta’s historic legacy, Steve lovingly restored to glory, an early 1900s craftsman home in Inman Park.
Steve returned to Columbus in 1989 and commuted to Atlanta daily, logging over a million miles on 185. Retiring from his position as network manager for AT&T, Steve enjoyed a restful two week retirement before becoming a regional sales manager for Dielectric Company. He loved traveling the country, troubleshooting, meeting and helping clients. He often stated that he could not believe his good fortune to perform a job that he loved so much. Steve invested time in his family, friends, a little fishing and season tickets to Georgia Tech football games. He and Alice were able to enjoy travel to national parks in the U.S. and cruise to Alaska with friends. Steve toured several European countries, but his favorite destination was visiting Disney World with his children. Steve was a faithful member of Wynnton Methodist Church and served terms as chairman of the finance and staff parish committees. For many years Steve taught a children’s Sunday School class. Steve served as usher and helped yearly during the church summer kids’ camp at FDR State Park and Pine Eden. Steve was a voracious reader who collected miscellaneous bits of sports and history trivia. When he shared his knowledge, there was a general consensus among his audience that some of it was bound to be true.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents. Steve is survived by his wife of 32 years, Alice, his son Jordan of Atlanta, and daughter and son-in-law Grace and Dylan Baas of Columbus.
Flowers will be accepted and donations in Steve’s memory may be made to Wynnton United Methodist Church of Columbus.
