Russell was born in Miami, Florida to the late Allen E. Curry and Nellie Louise Russell Curry. He grew up in Key West, Florida and graduated from Key West High School. He attended Emory University and graduated from West Georgia University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and later with a Masters of Education degree. He received an Educational Leadership Specialist degree from Georgia State University.
Russell retired from the Muscogee County School District where he served as Director of Transportation. Previously he served as a Consultant for the Georgia State Department of Education, as Principal of Schley County Elementary School, as Assistant Superintendent and Special Education Director in Meriwether County, as well as other positions around the state in the early years of his career.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lynn Curry; his daughters, Stephanie Chapman and her husband Ken, Leigh Watkins and her husband Doug, Lori Hughes and her husband, Jeff; his brother Greg Curry, Sr. and his wife, Annie; and his loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
A celebration of life to honor Russell will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 3:00 PM at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with visitation following the service.
