Rachel Yvonne Eiland Veasey passed away peacefully on February 18, 2024 at the age of 87 after a brief illness. Yvonne was born in Covington County, Alabama on August 3, 1936, to Henry Eiland and Daisy Woodham Eiland. She was sister to Mary, Jessie, and Margaret. In 1941, the family of six moved to Columbus, Georgia. Yvonne attended Kindergarten at Fox Elementary in Columbus, and later Bibb City Elementary after her mother and father found employment with Bibb Manufacturing Company. In June 1956, she graduated from Baker High School.
While in high school and for a short time after graduation, Yvonne worked at H. L Green store in downtown Columbus. On August 21, 1956, Yvonne began her 53 year career at the Muscogee County School District. Her first position there was filing and typing memos, but promotions followed due to her determination and strong work ethic. Her last position was Contract Administrator responsible for monitoring the District’s building construction project from bid to final construction. Yvonne loved her work at the District and was saddened to have to retire in 2010 after suffering a stroke.
In 1957, Yvonne met the love of her life, Joseph Wendall Veasey. They were married on April 9, 1959, in Phenix City, Alabama. A short time after their marriage, Joe and Yvonne built a home on 9th Street South, in Phenix City. They were long time members of Epworth Church, Phenix City. While they were not blessed with children of their own, they had a long and loving relationship with all their nieces and nephews. After a long illness, Joe passed away on March 22, 1983.
Those who continue to cherish her memory are her 16 nieces and nephews, 19 great nieces and nephews, and 26 great, great nieces and nephews. Yvonne leaves her loved ones with unforgettable memories, witty comments, and loving stories. She will be missed by her loving family, devoted friends, and all those who knew her.
A service to celebrate the life of Yvonne Veasey will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at 11:00 AM in the Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, Georgia. Family will visit with friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM. Burial will follow the service in Parkhill Cemetery.
