Mary Ellen was born in Talbot County and moved to Columbus after graduating from The Woman’s College of Georgia in Milledgeville (now Georgia College and State University). She taught elementary school for more than 35 years in Muscogee County and was beloved by her students. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Columbus and participated in every service, watching on television mostly during last years’ lockdowns and when she was unable to attend due to health reasons. Mary Ellen endured much tragedy in her life, being preceded in death by her three children; Kathryn, Melissa, and Lamar - but her faith in God never wavered. Her parents, Charlie and Mary (Miller) Nelson of Talbotton, as well as her siblings have all passed on before her; brother Bill Nelson of Cartersville, sisters and brothers in-law Joyce and Sharold Hannah of Temple, and Barbara and Billy Bass of Powder Springs. Mary Ellen and her surviving sister in-law, Dianne Nelson Horsley, were roommates in college and have remained close through the years. She is survived by two grandchildren, Angela and Michael, and one great-granddaughter, Gemma.
Mary Ellen loved her family and was adored by her cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. She loved telling stories of the “good old days” and giving tours of areas where she grew up. She loved her friends as well and visited with them often. She had a heart of gold and will be missed by many, but we have peace knowing that she is reunited with all those that have gone on before her and they are rejoicing together.
A celebration of Mary Ellen’s life will be Friday, July 2, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in the Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus, GA. with Dr. Jimmy Elder officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Burial to follow in Parkhill Cemetery.
