Mrs. Mary Ellen Magner, 94, of Columbus, GA, passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2015, at Brookside Glen Assisted living Home , Columbus, GA. Mrs. Magner was born December 10, 1920, in Lipan , TX. Her family moved to Vernon, TX in 1929, and she graduated from Northside High School in 1938. Mary met her future husband at Camp Wolters, TX, and they were married on April 15, 1944. They lived in many places, including Puerto Rico and Europe, and finally located to Columbus, GA, in 1959. Mary was very active in Fort Benning Officer’s Wife Club, Benning Ladies Golf Association, Springer Opera House Auxiliary, and the Muscogee County Elections Voting (Precinct Official).
The family will receive guests for visitation Thursday, September 17, 2015 at 5:00 pm in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, 4071 Macon Rd. Columbus, GA, followed by a Celebration of Mrs. Magner’s Life at 6:00 pm with Reverend Mike Stewart officiating. A private interment will be Friday at Fort Benning’s Main Post Cemetery.
Mary was preceded in death by her Parents Joseph Henry and Pearl Allison, seven siblings, husband Lt. Colonel George J. Magner, and son George J. Magner, III. She is survived by her daughter Mary M. Kirkland, of Fern Park, FL;and sons Lawrence V. Magner, of Columbus, GA; Stephen A. Magner(Deborah Ford) of Columbus, GA; grandchildren, John M. Kirkland (Mickie Green) of Sanford, FL; and Stephanie M. Fredrerick (Jonathan) of Columbus, GA; and great grandchildren Rory and Nyla Kirkland and Lorelei and Juliana Frederick.
