Lois Geeslin McCosh, 97, passed away Tuesday, September 26th at Kindred Hospice surrounded by her family. A private burial for family will be held Friday morning followed by a memorial service open to everyone at First Baptist Church at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus on Thursday, September 28th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
Mrs. McCosh was born November 1, 1919 in Bessemer, Alabama. A long-time resident of Columbus, Lois was creative in so many ways. She began her varied career with Eelbeck Milling Company and ended with Harvey Lumber Company at the age of 93. She was the first woman in sales at the Gas Light Company of Columbus but her true passion was cooking. She worked as a caterer for many years and specialized in weddings, serving her signature lemon cheese cake and cheese flowers. In 2008, she published a cookbook of her favorite recipes that sold over 2,000 copies.
Another avenue of interest was broadcasting. She was a member of American Women in Radio and Television. She appeared frequently with Rozell Fabiani, a dear friend, on “The Rozell Show”. Lois was also a Gracious Lady of Georgia. She later served on the committee and played a vital role in their yearly gala. In her daily walk of life, Lois exemplified all of the things that signify a gracious lady.
Lois was a member of the DAR and the UDC. She was involved in the Executive Club of Columbus where she served as past president. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church where she loved to worship. Her faith and love for the Lord was displayed in everything she did. Her family and friendships were her earthly treasures, and she showed her love and faith in so many ways. The door to her home was always open and many meals were shared there among family and friends.
Preceding her in death were her husband Thomas E. McCosh, daughter-in-law, Connie McCosh, and son-in-law, Jack Buchanan. She is survived by her children Ben McCosh (Annelle) of Lake Harding, AL; Louis McCosh (Julie) of Hamilton, GA; Jim McCosh (Cathy) of Gastonia, NC; Marjorie Buchanan of Columbus, GA; and Bebe Cole (Bob) of Savannah, GA. Her grandchildren are Melanie Wright (Paul); Stephanie Cox (Jay); Jennifer McCosh; Gretchen Hinson (Marc); Kim Shank (Chris); Jay McCosh; Melissa Weaver (Richard); Bart Buchanan; Todd Buchanan; Courtney Lee (Bobby); and Robert Cole. She leaves 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
