Lena Myers, age 103 years and only missing her 104 birthday by 9 days, made her entry to heaven on December 11, 2020 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law. By her bedside was her daughter, Judy, and granddaughter, Michelle.
Family will have a visitation on Monday, Dec. 14, 4:00 – 6:00 PM at Striffler Hamby Funeral Home, Macon Rd. Face masks are required due to COVID restrictions.
A Celebration of Lena's life will be held on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at 2:00 pm at Beallwood Baptist Church. The family will be there for visitation at 1:00 pm. Funeral will also be available through Facebook Live, on the Striffler-Hamby at Parkhill Cemetery page.
Lena was born Dec 20, 1916 in Geneva County, AL to the late Frank and Clara Lewis. She married DeWitt Talmadge Sasser on October 9, 1938. He was the father of their two children, Ray Sasser and Judy Sasser McCrone. DeWitt passed away December 7, 1969. They were married for 31 years.
She married Tommy R. Myers, Sr. October 19, 1982. He passed away on May 24, 2000; they were married for 18 years.
She worked for the Green Thumb Florist before going back to work and retiring from the Bibb Mill.
She was a member of Oates Avenue Baptist church until it had to close, and then she became an active member of Beallwood Baptist Church. She loved her church family. Being the oldest member, she rarely missed a service until this year, 2020.
She was a member of the Monthly Tuesday bible study that was started from former members of Oates Ave. Baptist. She was part of the Fox Senior Center. She was a faithful part of the Thursday Quilting Group. She loved playing Friday Night Dominos with the Senior Adults at Britt David Baptist Church. She loved making handmade quilts, sewing crocheting, cooking and anything to help others. Her home was always open to everyone.
Besides her parents and husbands, she is predeceased by her loving son, Talmadge Ray Sasser, that passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2007; a sister, Voncil McGowan; and brothers, Carthell Lewis Sr., Henry Lewis, and Robert Earl Lewis.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter and best friend, Judy Sasser McCrone; a very special son-in-law, who was like a son, Don McCrone of Columbus, GA; grandchildren and their spouses, Michelle McCrone Arndt and Craig (AI) Arndt, Silverhill, AL, Aaron and Patti McCrone of Jesup, GA; and great-grandchildren, Brittany, Brina and Brody Arndt all of Silverhill, AL. Lena also leaves behind special sisters and brother-in-law, Lillie Pope, Gladys Jones, Jeanette Miller, David and Sue Sasser all of Columbus, GA. Several cousins, many special nieces, nephews and special friends.
Known as Mother, Grandmother, and Grammy, Ms. Lena will not be forgotten. She left part of heart in all of us. Lena was a woman of Prayer and strong Christian faith and example. She always gave God the praise for the good and the bad.
Flowers/Green plants will be accepted or donations can be made in the memory of Lena Myers to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missionaries through Beallwood Baptist Church or Britt David Baptist Church.
