Kathryn Mae Smith Posey, age 97, resident of Columbus, died on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at Columbus Hospice House. A graveside service for family and friends will be held in Parkhill Cemetery on Saturday, February 14, 2015, 2:00 pm with Dr. Kevin Calhoun officiating.
Mrs. Posey, the only child of the late Cossie Marvin Smith and Minnie Mae Coleman Smith, was born February 12, 1917 in Columbus, Georgia. She married her husband, Oliver Leroy Posey on July 27, 1935. They were side by side over 65 years before his passing in 2001. Together, they traveled to many places across the U.S. and abroad, including Canada, Mexico and Hong Kong, China. After her husband’s passing, Mrs. Posey carried on the dancing tradition with her friends through 2014. Mr. and Mrs. Posey were both members of Wynnbrook Baptist on River Road.
Kathryn was a traditional homemaker who enjoyed sewing, gardening, cheerful music and generally spending time in the sunshine. She also loved to collect jewelry and antiques. In addition, she loved spending time with her family, especially when taking care of her grandchildren.
Other than her parents and husband, Mrs. Posey was preceded in death by her daughter, Sylvia Annette “Ann” Posey Gentry; and granddaughter, Kathryn “Kathy” Smith Missildine.
She is survived by her son, LTC (Ret) Charles Edward Posey (Rosita); daughter Marilyn Dethetre “Dee” Smith Gray; 9 grandchildren Sharon Shook, Kevin Martin, Steve Smith (Terri), Derek Gentry (Lisa), Daryl “Bubba” Gentry, Randy Smith, Denny Gentry (Randi), Dana Gentry, Susan Gray, 14 great-grandchildren, Crystal Smith Wood (Bryan), Stephen Smith, Emerson Smith, Mandy Smith, Ashley Gentry Cooper (Brian), Amber Gentry, Allie Gentry, D.J. Gentry, Cathryn Ann Gentry, Dawson Gentry, Dylan Gentry, Kenneth Shook, David Shook, Samantha Summerville; 6 great-great grandchildren, Hailey, Brandon, Madison, Hunter, Bryant, Gentry; and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to Columbus Hospice House or another charity of choice.
