Julius Edmond "Bo" Cartledge, 89, of Columbus, Georgia passed away of heart failure on Saturday afternoon, April 16, 2011, at his home. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary. The funeral services will be held Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 11:00 am at St. Luke United Methodist Church with Dr. Hal Brady and Reverend Helen Berenthien officiating. Interment will follow the service at 12:30 in Riverdale Cemetery, Columbus, Georgia. At home in Columbus, Georgia, Bo was born January 27, 1922. He grew up on Broad Street and graduated Columbus High School in 1937. Proud to be an American, he served his country during World War II, Bo enlisted in 1940 into the U.S. Air Corps as a Technical Sergeant at Gunter and Maxwell Fields in Montgomery, Alabama, then moved to Clark Air Force Base in the Philippine, Islands, then to Northeast Field, Guam, returning to Wright-Dayton Air Force base in Dayton, Ohio. At Wright-Dayton, Bo received his Honorable Discharge in November of 1948. Bo was a member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars. Following the War, Bo was a self-employed business man. As a concessionaire with the Fort Benning Post Exchange he provided postage stamp vending services and package and mailing services for the Troops. Bo also owned and rented several apartment units in Columbus. A life-long member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and The William Henry Shaw Fellowship Class, Bo attended regularly and served in the Nursery Department for twenty years. He served as an usher, greeter and as an all-round handy man. Mission trips to Belize and Nicaragua allowed Bo to serve in other countries while assisting with over twenty Habitat Houses in the Columbus area. During his early business life, Bo was an active member of The Muscogee Exchange Club. Later Bo received membership in the Coweta Chapter of The Sons of The American Revolution (SAR) as an eight generation in the new world. As an SAR member he received recognition with an Outstanding Citizenship Award, War Service Medal, and a Bronze Good Citizenship Medal. Bo was a past member of The Columbus Executive Club. The Sertoma Club Awarded him with the 2008 "Service To Mankind" Award, and WRBL presented Bo the "Living Your Best" Award. WTVM acknowledge Bo as a "Columbus Angel" for service to the community. Born to Emmett Beard Cartledge and Emma Jane Dudley Cartledge, Bo was the fifth of six children. On June 10, 1946 he married Jean Miriam York of Monroeville, Alabama who preceded him in death, after 63 years of marriage. Survivors include his brother, Andrew Cosby Cartledge of Columbus, GA; his eldest son, Wayne Curtis Cartledge of Columbus, GA., his wife Rebecca "Becky" Nix and their two sons Mason York and Brenton Curtis Cartledge, and their two spouses, Elizabeth and Kourtney, respectively; his daughter, Amy Cartledge Thomas of Charlotte, NC, her husband, Lee Hamilton and their two daughters, Anna York and Avery Bynum Thomas; and his youngest son, Glenn Edmond Cartledge of Atlanta, GA., his wife, Nancy Jewell and their daughter, Amanda Nell and their son, Matthew Glenn Cartledge. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. Luke United Methodist Church "Memorial Maintenance Fund" or "Food Pantry Program" in memory of Julius E. "Bo" Cartledge.
